Past perfect

Past perfect is used when the speaker is talking about two different events at two different times in the past, and one event finishes before the second event happens. 

There are two events. Both of them happened in the past. One of them happened before the other. We use past perfect (had+ past participle) for the first event, and simple past for the second event. 

Examples:

I had left the house when she arrived. 

I looked for the manager, but she had left the office. 

I had done my homework before she arrived.

I had gone to the café before I came home.
