Simple past

Simple past

We use simple past to talk about the things that happened in the past and were finished. At the end of these sentences you can use words or phrases such as yesterday, last night, 2 weeks ago, last month, 4 years ago, yesterday morning, at 10 o’clock, and so on.  

To be verbs past tense (was and were)

  • Positive forms:

 + I was so happy yesterday.

 + You were really nice.

 + She was a bit angry.

 + He was at work last night.

 + It was a good point.

 + We were afraid of dogs.

 + You were a child.

 + They were late.

  • Negative forms:

 _ I wasn’t mad.

 _ You weren’t comfortable.

 _ She wasn’t tired last week.

 _ He wasn’t at the park yesterday.

 _ It wasn’t expensive.

 _ We weren’t upset that night.

 _ You weren’t satisfied.

 _ They weren’t in the hotel.

  • Question and answers:

 I was happy yesterday.

 Were you happy yesterday?

 Yes, I was.

 You were kind to them.

 Were you kind to them?

 Yes, I was.

 She was tired.

 Was she tired?

 No, she wasn’t.

 He was a bit angry.

 Was he a bit angry?

 Yes, he was.

 It was cold.

 Was it cold?

 No, it wasn’t.

 We were stubborn.

 Were you stubborn?

 Yes, we were.

 You were afraid of dogs.

 Were you afraid of cats?

 No, we weren’t.

 They were at the party.

 Were they at the party?

 No, they weren’t.

Simple past (for regular verbs, just add -ed)

 I cleaned my teeth yesterday.

 She worked in a bank last year.

 Yesterday, it rained heavily.

 The bus stopped at the station.

 We enjoyed the party last week.

 They danced all night.

 She talked about her newborn baby.

 It barked all day.

Simple past (for irregular verbs, change the verb)

 I began working 2 hours ago. (begin)

 She broke the glass. (break)

 He brought his nephew yesterday.(bring)

 They built a house together. (build)

 I bought a new scarf. (buy)

 He caught a cold. (catch)

 We came late. (come)

 She did her homework. (do)

Simple past negative form(just ad didn't before the verb and use the basic form of the verb)

+ I played the piano when I was a child.

_I didn’t play the piano when I was a child.

+She watched a great movie last night.

_ She didn’t watch a great movie last night.

 +They helped their mom last week.

 _They didn’t help their mom last week.

 +He got me a present.

 _He didn’t get me a present.

Simple past question form (Did+ subject+ base form of the verb)

+ I watched a movie last night.

 Did you watch a movie last night? No, I didn’t.

+ She forgot the homework.

 Did she forget the homework? Yes, she did.

 +They won a prize last year.

 Did they win a prize last year? No, they didn’t.

+ We knew the answer.

 Did you know the answer? Yes, we did.
