Questions to ask when you meet someone for the first time


  • How are you? good/ great/ wonderful/ not bad/ fine, thanks/ etc (how about you? or what about you?)
  • How is it going? not bad/ great/ pretty good/ etc (How about yourself?)
  • What’s up? Nothing/ Not much (what’s up with you?)
  • How do you do? Well/ good/ great/ etc (and you?)
  • How are things? Things are great. We are all healthy and doing pretty well. (How about you? or what about you?)
  • How is everything? Everything is great. 
  • How are you doing? I’m doing well. (How about yourself?)
  • What’s been going on? Not much, just enjoying life as much as we can. (you?)
  • What’s new? We bought a new house./ We had a new baby. / etc.
  • How was your day/weekend? It was good/great.
  • What have you been up to? Nothing much. I’ve been practicing English.
  • How are you holding up? (It’s been hard, but we have had a lot of help. Thanks for asking. 
  • How are you feeling? I’m feeling ok. Thanks for asking.
