Facts and statistics

A fact is something which is objectively verifiable. Statistics are facts in numbers, based on data from samples and populations. They might be the product of experiments or surveys, and they are meant to be a reasonable subset of a much larger group, so you can draw conclusions about the numbers

Sample paragraph

The term population explosion is usually applied to the rapid growth of the last three centuries. In the 200 years from 1650 to 1850, world population doubled and reached its first billion. In the next 80 years, it doubled again; and by 1975, it had doubled once more to a total of 4 billion. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, it is estimated that it will exceed 6 billion and possibly approach 8 billion unless there is a major reduction in birth rates or a major increase in death rates.

Another sample

Exams apparently have a marked effect on the blood pressure of the students taking them. In a recent study, it was shown that the average student’s blood pressure rose from 115/55 before the exam to 155/15 at the end of the exam. Ten minutes after the examination period had ended, the students’ blood pressure were still quite high, averaging 150/110.

Worldwide, tobacco use causes more than 7 million deaths per year. If the pattern of smoking all over the globe doesn’t change, more than 8 million people a year will die from diseases related to tobacco use by 2030. Cigarette smoking is responsible for more than 480,000 deaths per year in the United States, including more than 41,000 deaths resulting from secondhand smoke exposure. This is about one in five deaths annually, or 1,300 deaths every day. On average, smokers die 10 years earlier than nonsmokers. If smoking continues at the current rate among U.S. youth, 5.6 million of today’s Americans younger than 18 years of age are expected to die prematurely from a smoking-related illness. This represents about one in every 13 Americans aged 17 years or younger who are alive today.
