Format of an essay

An essay

An essay is a group of paragraphs that are closely related to each other. Each essay should at least have four paragraphs.

Writing an essay is no more difficult than writing a paragraph except that an essay is longer.  The principles of organization are the same for both, so if you can write a good paragraph, you can write a good essay, too. An essay has three main parts(paragraphs) : an introduction (introductory paragraph), one body (at least one, but usually two or more paragraphs), and a conclusion (concluding paragraph).

Introduction

The introductory paragraph is the first paragraph of your essay and it includes some general statements and a thesis statement. General statements: Introduce the general topic of the essay. Capture the readers interest or attention. The thesis statement: States the specific topic May list subtopics of the main topic May indicate the pattern of organization of the essay. Is usually the last sentence in the introductory paragraph

Bodies

Each body paragraph includes a topic sentence, some supporting sentences, some details, and a conclusion (Writing a conclusion for each body paragraph is optional). The body paragraphs in an essay are like the supporting sentences in a paragraph. They are the place to develop your topic and prove your points. You can use facts, examples, and other details to support your points. Quotations are paraphrases can also help to develop the subtopics that you explore in the body paragraphs. Body paragraphs start from the second paragraph of your essay. You can have one or more body paragraphs

Conclusion

The importance of a conclusion: - It summarizes the main points of the essay. It restates the thesis(using different words). It makes a final comment about the essay’s main idea. Note: conclusions at the end of paragraphs are optional, but the conclusion paragraph in an essay is necessary(you can’t skip it)

Sample introduction paragraph

Taoism is an ancient philosophy from Asia that places great importance on the natural world. Taoists believe that spirit can be found in every person or thing, living or non-living. For the Taoist, even a mountain or a stone contains spirit. Lao Tsu, a Taoist write and philosopher said, ‘ people follow earth. Earth follows heaven. Heaven follows the Tao. The Tao follows what is natural.’ for thousands of years in China and other Asian countries, gardens have been an important way to create a place where people can feel the spirit of the natural world. Creating a Taoist garden is an art. No two Taoist gardens are exactly alike, but they are all similar.  All Taoist gardens include four essential elements: water, mountains, buildings, and bridges.

Sample body paragraph

The meanings of words sometimes change over time. The word cool is a good example. Cool has be used in English for a long time to describe a temperature that is ‘not warm but not too cold’ or to describe a person who is ‘calm and unemotional’. A word with the opposite meaning of cool is square. Square is, of course, a shape, but it also is used to describe a person who is not cool. This may be because a person who is too old-fashioned and not flexible is like a shape with four straight sides and four corners.

Sample conclusion paragraph

To sum up, student-centered teaching is very important to learning. Three kinds of student-centered approaches are inquiry-based learning, problem-based learning, and project-based learning. Of course, each individual teacher might use these approaches in different ways. In the end, however, student-centered methods will develop stronger critical thinking skills and better prepare students for future success.

Read this essay and answer the following questions.

Communicating effectively in a new country and in a new tongue requires more than just learning the language. Nonverbal communication, including body language, is equally important. A person’s facial expressions, body gestures, and physical attitude transmit powerful messages that go beyond words. Therefore, anyone who intends to live , work, or study in another country should learn the body language of that culture, including acceptable ways to use the face, and gesture with the body.

First, let’s consider how people use the human face to communicate. Research shows that people everywhere reveal basic emotions, such as happiness, sadness, excitement, and confusion, through facial expressions. However, the amount of emotion people are comfortable showing varies from place to place. Take, for example, the extremely expressive faces of people in Italy and Spain. They are in constant motion and reveal feeling easily and often. In contrast, the faces of people from Asian countries tend not to reveal feelings as much or as quickly. Eye contact is a big part of facial expression, too. In the United States, speakers use their eyes to connect with others; people will look directly into a speaker’s eyes to show interest.

The gestures that people make with their heads, shoulders, arms, and hands are another important means of communicating. In most- but not all- countries, shaking the head from side to side means “No” and nodding the head up and down means “Yes”. In Bulgaria, the reverse is true. Nodding means “No” and shaking the head from side to side means “Yes”. Clearly, typical gestures that people use every day can cause major misunderstanding depending on where and how they are used.

In short, body language is an important form of communication that varies from place to place. When people travel, they should not presume that the rules for body language in their home culture apply everywhere else. In fact, just as people focus their attention on grammar and vocabulary to master a language, they should devote time and energy to learning the body language of a new country or culture.
