Enumeration

Enumeration

What is enumeration?
In this type of paragraph, the writer starts with a general class, then goes on to break it down by listing some or all of its members or parts. In this type of paragraph, you use enumerators like kinds, types, factors, characteristics, classes, parts, elements, aspects, categories, divisions, subdivisions, and so on. Remember that enumerators are valuable key words. You should try to put them in topic sentences of enumerative paragraphs. This will help you to organize your paragraphs more clearly; it will also help the reader to follow your train of thought more easily.

sentence)

Enumeration

When making a list, you should use some of these listing signals:

Group 1:

first, second, third, then, next, last, finally, … (remember that after these listing signals, you need a comma and a complete sentence)

Group 2:

The first one is, the second kind is, the next type is, the last factor is, … (remember that after these listing signals you need to complete the sentence)

Model paragraph

There are three basic kinds of materials that can be found in any good library. First, there are books on all subjects, both in English and in many other languages. These books are organized according to subject, title, and author in a central file called the card catalog. Books can generally be checked out of the library and taken home for a period of two to four weeks. Second, there are reference works, which include encyclopedias, dictionaries, bibliographies, atlases, etc., and which generally must be used in the library itself. Third, there are periodicals-magazines, newspapers, pamphlets-which are filed alphabetically in racks, or which have been microfilmed to conserve space. Like reference works, periodicals cannot usually be removed from the library.

Ascending, descending, and equal order

In ascending order, we list the minor points first, saving the most important points for the last part. This keeps the reader interested, since the paragraph has a kind of “dramatic structure”; it builds up to or ascends to a climax. We indicate ascending order by means of a special group of listing signals at nearly the end of the paragraph such as the most essential kind, the most important reason, finally and most importantly, and so on.

Ascending, descending, and equal order

In descending order, the writer lists the most important point first, then
goes on to speak of the other points. The writer usually thinks that the other
points are important, too; he simply wishes to mention the most important
one first. Thus, descending order is essentially the inverse of ascending order. Descending order, too, has its special listing signals such as the chief reason is, the most important factor is, and so on.

In equal order, the writer lists all the points equally. The writer doesn’t want to show that one point is more important than the others. so, in this order, all the points are equally important.

Ascending

There were several reasons why I decided to attend Bingston University.
First of all, the tuition was reasonable. Second, the university had a deferred payment plan; this represented a great convenience to my parents. Another reason was the fact that Bingston hires only the finest of teachers to teach in its graduate program. My chief reason, however, was Bingston’s mandatory work and study program in agriculture, my chosen field: the university requires all agriculture students to gain practical experience by working on farms in the area while they are still going to school; I knew that this would provide invaluable experience for me to better use the skills I had learned in the classroom.

Descending

There were several reasons why I decided to attend Bingston University. My chief reason for choosing that university was its wonderful work and study program in agriculture, my chosen field. The university requires all its agriculture students to gain practical experience by working on farms in the area while they are still going to school; I knew that this would provide invaluable experience and prepare me to better use the skills I had learned in the classroom. Second, Bingston hires only the finest teachers to teach in its graduate program. Then, there was Bingston’s deferred payment plan; this represented a great convenience to my parents. A final reason was the reasonable tuition.

Exercise one

Add some listing signals to complete the paragraph.

Most middle-class Americans use four main distances, or zones, in their business and social relations; each of these distances has a near and a far phase and is accompanied by a change in the volume of the voice. ……………. intimate distance, which varies from direct physical contact to a distance of six to eighteen inches, and which is used for our most private activities-caressing another person or comforting a crying child. ………….. personal distance, which has a close phase of one and a half to two and a half feet; it is at this distance that wives usually stand from their husbands in public. If another woman moves into this zone, the wife will most likely be disturbed. The far phase-two and a half to four feet-is the distance used to “keep someone at arm’s length” and is the most common spacing used by people in conversation. ………..social distance, which is employed during business transactions or exchanges with a clerk or repairman. People who work together tend to use close social distance, four to seven feet. The far phase of the third zone-seven to twelve feet-is where people stand when someone says, “Stand back so I can look at you.” This distance lends a formal tone to business or social discourse. …………public distance, which is used by teachers in classrooms or speakers at public gatherings. At its farthest phase-twenty-five feet and beyond-it is used for important public figures.

Exercise two

Various answers have been proposed to the question which reflects one of man’s deepest needs: how is it possible to overcome the awareness of human separation, the overpowering feeling of loneliness? One way of achieving this aim lies in the so- called orgiastic states, such as the hypnosis-producing rituals of “primitive” tribes, or alcoholism and drug addiction in our own society. Another, and far more frequent, solution is a union with others based on conformity-in dress, customs, ideas, and even daily routines. A third way of attaining union lies in creative activity: the artist unites himself with his material, which represents the world outside himself. But the problem with this union, as with the first two mentioned, is that none of them is personal, and all are transitory. By far the only permanent answer to this great problem of human existence lies in the achievement of interpersonal union, of fusion with another person. In other words, it lies only in love. Mature love is the ultimate force which breaks the walls separating from his fellow men, the force which unites him with others, thus allowing him to overcome his sense of isolation. In love, the paradox occurs that two human beings remain two, yet become
one!
