Cause and effect essay

Cause / effect essay

A cause and effect essay is structured around the goal of discovering and discussing events that lead to certain results. When writing a cause and effect essay, you should be sure that you have researched the specific causes and are confident that you’re demonstrating why they lead to particular results.

Organization of cause and/or effect essay

You can organize a cause/effect essay in two main ways:

1- block organization

2- chain organization

Block organization

In block organization, you first discuss all of the cause(in one, two, three, or more paragraphs depending on the number of causes). Then you discuss all of the effects. You can discuss either the causes or effects first. Of course, you can also discuss only causes or only effects.

Focus on cause

  • Introduction
  • Cause 1
  • Cause 2
  • Cause 3
  • Conclusion

You can have as many bodies as you wish.

Focus on effect

  • Introduction
  • Effect 1
  • Effect 2
  • Effect 3
  • Conclusion

You can have as many bodies as you want.

Cause and effect

  • Introduction
  • All the causes (cause 1, cause 2, …)
  • All the effects (effect 1, effect 2, …)
  • Conclusion

chain organization

The other organizational pattern you use to write about causes and effects is chain organization. Causes and effects are linked to each other in a continuous chain.

Cause and effect

  • Introduction (background information and thesis statement)
  • The bodies ( cause 1, effect 1, cause 2, effect 2, … )
  • Conclusion (summary and restatement of the thesis statement)

A sample essay

Years ago, medical researchers identified a psychological disorder that they named Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD. People who suffer from SAD become very depressed during the winter months. Doctors now understand the causes of this condition which affects millions of people; It is particularly common in areas of the far north where winter nights are long, and the hours of daylight are few.

SAD results from a decrease in the amount of sunlight sufferers receive. There are several reasons why decreased sunlight may have this impact on some people. Doctors know that decreased sunlight increases the production of melatonin. This sleep- related hormone is generated at increased levels in the dark. Therefore, when the days are shorter and darker, the level of melatonin rises. Shorter, darker days also decrease production of serotonin, a chemical that helps transmit nerve  impulses. Lack of serotonin plays a role in causing depression in some people. In others, who may not usually suffer from depression, winter depression may result from an imbalance of melatonin and serotonin in the body. Also, doctors believe that decreased sunlight may cause a disturbance in the body’s natural clock. The combination of chemical imbalance and biological clock disturbance, doctors say, results in some symptoms. These can include lack of energy, oversleeping, weight gain, and anxiety. They are all signs of depression.

Since absence of light seems to be the cause of SAD, a daily dose of light appears to be the cure. Doctors advise patients to sit in front of a special light box that simulates natural light for a few hours every day. An hour’s walk outside in winter sunlight may also help.

In conclusion, the depressive effect of low sunlight levels may help explain why some people suffer feelings of tiredness and sadness in winter. The 19th-century American poet, Emily Dickinson, even wrote about the feelings of sadness she experienced during winter afternoons. But if low sunlight can produce such feelings, there is nevertheless hope for sufferers. In fact, the problem itself may suggest its own remedy! When the days grow short, turn on the lights.

Basically, optimism means hopefulness and confidence about life and focus on positive aspects of everything. Some believe that optimistic views in life will have beneficial effects on psychological and physical health. However, excessive optimism can have harmful effects on psychological and physical health. Many tests and research have been done on people to see how optimism works in our life. In following paragraphs the impacts of optimism on our health are mentioned.

Studies show that people who have an optimistic view are more likely to have a healthier life. They are potentially hopeful about their life and want to make it better day by day; therefore, they might prevent smoking and drinking alcohol. They know how to face problems in an appropriate way so that they doesn’t harm their health. Optimistic people have a positive view towards the life and themselves; as a result, they tend to have a healthier body; so they mostly use sunscreen, take vitamins, and do other health-related actions.

According to some research, there have been studies on people who are optimistic about their lives and the studies have shown that the optimistic people are less likely to become sick or to develop a disease in compare with a person who is pessimistic. For example, according to studies, a person who is optimistic has a less chance of high blood pressure than a pessimist. Another study has shown that optimism can lead to faster recoveries from surgeries or an accident.

To conclude, I agree with the positive impacts of optimism. A person who has a good attitude toward life in general, tends to lead a healthier life physically and psychologically. However, having too much optimism in life may be damaging to a person’s physical health and psychological health. As long as optimism is used in a positive way, a person can lead a happy and healthy life.

The homeless epidemic is a serious problem in nearly every major city across the country. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, there are over 500,000 people experiencing homelessness on any given night. It’s a difficult challenge to tackle precisely because it is so multi-faceted, both in terms of its causes and its far-reaching effects. Homelessness affects not only the people who must struggle to survive on the street, but also the business owners or residents in the neighborhoods. Petty crime and drug abuse are common. While many factors have contributed to the rise in homeless rates, one of the most profound is the lack of adequate social support services.

By definition, a homeless person is someone without a permanent home. They may seek shelter in parking garages, ATM vestibules, and subway stations. On a purely practical level, if a city can provide enough homeless shelters and other forms of affordable housing, the people who would otherwise sleep on the streets can sleep far more safely with a consistent roof over their heads.

Social support services, whether they are funded publicly or privately, would be able to tackle many of the immediate and long-term challenges that face people experiencing homelessness. In addition to providing adequate and reliable shelter, services like drug counselling, treatment for physical or emotional abuse, and career counselling can address some of the factors that lead to homelessness.

The individual stories of each person going through homelessness will vary. What is often found, though, is that the homelessness came about because of a series of events. A person may unexpectedly lose their job, which may lead to family problems at home, which may lead to drug abuse as a coping mechanism, which may lead to further financial stress, and so on. Appropriate social services at any point in this process may be able to prevent homelessness from becoming this person’s reality.

The effects of homelessness are equally complex and can be mirror images of the root causes. Because the person is experiencing homelessness, this may put profound strain on personal relationships. Drug abuse can become an issue, as the person seeks some way of coping with the pain and hardship of living on the streets. This leads to a downward spiral that drives the person deeper and deeper into the depths of crippling poverty and isolation.

The impact extends well beyond the individual, too. As homelessness becomes an increasingly visible issue in a neighborhood, home values can plummet. Middle and working class families may move out, providing a bigger opening for various forms of crime. Businesses may close as the area becomes too prone to theft and property crime.

Every city, every neighborhood faces unique challenges when it comes to homelessness. While the specific root causes can vary between individuals, the lack of adequate social services is a leading contributor. The right social services can address, reduce or even remove some of these other underlying causes. With powerful effects for both the individual and society at large, homelessness is a pressing issue and one that must be approached with tact and compassion.

Optimism means seeing the glass “half-full” rather than “half-empty;” the optimists find the good in in the world.there is power in an optimistic life. Against common belief, the impacts of optimism on people’s daily life are of great impact. “People who are optimistic enjoy the results of greater achievements, better health, and more happiness.” In fact, being optimistic help people to survive in better life conditions by psychological, physical and also time-saving benefits. Now let see two different aspects of pure optimism.

First,it is better to focus on the positive side of optimism and its great effects.Being optimistic implies being a positive, constructive, and creative thinker. Which implies that when a man is optimistic, success cannot be far from him.The effect optimism places on a person’s future includes, successful marriage, career actualization and manifestation, they don’t worry about obstacles and challenges, no beliefs in defeat, and they confidently solve individual and conventional problems.

Second positive point of optimism;Optimistic people generally have a better chance obtaining more life satisfaction and self-fulfillment. A sense of optimism promotes not just psychological health, but physical well-being as well. Optimism is linked to longevity,Also, it keeps the body system on a low blood pressure, this is because the mind is always rest assured of a positive result from all situations around it, thus leading to lower anxiety and therefore, lower blood pressure. Additionally, the human body appreciates less pain, however, a pessimistic person would have more tendency to feel pain since they always expect pains, while an optimistic person would live mostly painless, this is because their positive thoughts put them on a level of a higher pain tolerance.

Although it is good to have a positive attitude but being overly optimistic can make you lose touch with what is realistic, as result, being too optimistic can lead to impracticality and overconfidence. In fact there are several negative points about optimism as well. If you don’t think about what could go wrong, you won’t be able to prevent it from happening. Mental strength stems from a good balance of realism and optimism; so developing comfort with the truth will help you build mental structure.

In short, remember that an optimistic attitude helps us be happier, more successful, and healthier. Optimism can protect against depression even for people who are at risk for it.Though an optimistic outlook makes people more resistant to stress and may even help people live longer, But extreme optimists wouldn’t work more hours compared to the moderate optimists, they save less, likely to pay off the balances on their credit cards on time, and are likely to engage in some kind of unrealistic behaviors. Therefore, being moderate in an optimistic living is the good life to live.

Optimism is an attitude reflecting a belief or hope that the outcome of some specific endeavor, or outcomes in general, will be positive, favorable, and desirable. a common idiom used to illustrate optimism versus pessimism is a glass filled with water to the halfway point: an optimist is said to see the glass as half full, while a pessimist sees the glass as half empty.

The term derives from the Latin optimum, meaning “best”. being optimistic, in the typical sense of the word, is defined as expecting the best possible outcome from any given situation. this is usually referred to in psychology as dispositional optimism. it thus reflects a belief that future conditions will work out for the best. for this reason, it is seen as a trait that fosters resilience in the face of stress.

Theories of optimism include dispositional models, and models of explanatory style. methods to measure optimism have been developed within both theoretical systems, such as various forms of the life orientation test, for the original definition of optimism, or the attributional style questionnaire designed to test optimism in terms of explanatory style.

Variation in optimism and pessimism is somewhat heritable and reflects biological trait systems to some degree. it is also influenced by environmental factors, including family environment, with some suggesting it can be learned. optimism may also be linked to health.

*Cause and Effects of video games on body and brain:

All of us know that playing with computers, machines like PS4, PS5 and maybe Xbox are so wonderful. when you are playing with this machines it means that you are consuming your energy, and why? the answer is clear, because your brain or mind is thinking about how can skip this part or do the mission? or your watching the screen with your eyes like me that I’m typing the essay for you right now so this is naturally you lose your energy.

Anyway if you ask yourself that what is cause of my headache or eye ache?!
the answer is that because of effect of the light of the screen that you are watching with your eyes and if you are headache it’s because of that your brain is analyzing the colors.

actually the worst effect of playing video games is that most of the time you are angry
and most of the time you are asking yourself that what is cause of my violence?!
maybe you don’t believe that because you are a player and love your games but when you are playing video games with this machines and when you repeat this process you can understand that for a while your behavior changed with others you are angry or worst than that is sometimes you are depressed.

Anyway as a result the suggestion of the doctors is that you can play but not every time because playing video games can negative effect on your body and your mind and you have to observe or control that.

Focus on effect of optimism

Optimism is the perception we have of events and circumstances that occur to us. Whatever situation we experience or any events that occur are good , and it cannot be otherwise. Optimism can dramatically changes your life and has a positive effect on your life.

First, optimism causes peace of mind; optimism makes you pay attention to the positive side of life coins. When one thinks of the positive part of life, one achieves peace of mind. Optimism calms you down, because you are no longer limited to using the method of attack and violence to achieve your goal.

Self confidence is another effect of optimism in a person. When you are optimistic, your confidence goes up; and it gives you confidence in your abilities. When you have a good idea of your self, the people of around
you are forced to think and agree with you.

As a result, when human focus on the positive aspects of life, they gain self confidence and move forward with enthusiasm and achieve every thing. Your life changes as a result. Is not this true??

Effects of optimism
Positive thinking is a from of thinking that uses the worst of conditions to achieve the best results. Thinking plays a very important role in human life. Human live by their own way of thinking and behaving. Positive thinking in life has many effects that improve the way people think and it’s effects is one of the important factors in life.
Positive thinking is one of the most important life skills of successful people.in fact ,positive thinking helps us to set the right goals and achieve them, as well as the health of our soul and body. Being positive may seem a little difficult at first because the energy of negative thoughts are always greater than positive thoughts and human mind tends to think negative thoughts.
A positive person is always looking for a solution. As soon as he finds a solution, he eliminates the problem of stress an anxiety. That is, positive thinking manager stress an improves health and has a wonderful effect on disease resistance as well aa improving physical and mental problem.
We all tend to that relationship with positive people, so a positive attitude leads to a better and stronger relationship with other, and this allows us to focus on our goals and not deviate from our path of progress , to discover our worth and to believe in our abilities. And try harder to achieve our desires and put our fears on the path to success.
As a result, when a person becomes aware of his own talents and successes, this causes him not to give in easily to other and to take the initiative. And given merit, power and participated in more activities and felt the beauties of life and its blessing more.

Optimism can affect on physical health and the researches shows that people who have an optimistic view are more interested in be healthy:they don’t drink alcohol, they don’t use junk food and regularly they exercise .so people who are optimistic are less likely to become sick or to develop as a person who is pessimistic.
Another thing is that people who are optimistic are fewer symptoms of depression, they are more satisfied from their status rather than others specially it has been observed in adolescence.they can easily deal with their situation and counter with hard situations like childbirth, cancer and…..
Another point about optimism is that they are even good at their job or more successful because they beleive in themselves and they can handle situation in a correct way.
So we understood that optimistic people are more happy, powerful, healthy and successful in their life.So watch your world more beautiful to catch these keys.

shaghayegh mirshekar

Optimism means having a positive outlook on life and the world around us. Optimists see the world in a more beautiful and better way. Surely in this world no one can claim to be perfect and at the same time have no problems in life and everything is perfect. But when we make optimism our routine, the world also shows us its optimism.

You have to be brave to be optimistic, because optimism requires courage. Optimism does not mean optimism, but sharpness.
Reasons for optimism include hope, hope for a life of courage and healthy living.
Optimism has many effects on life
Further studies show that patients who are optimistic are more likely to pursue their treatment. For example, patients who are optimistic and have optimistic thoughts are more concerned about their treatment and have more hope of recovery, and patients who are pessimistic. They lose hope sooner and may sometimes discontinue treatment.

Another reason that can be emphasized on the effects of optimism is that when optimistic people fail, they do not give up and do not stop trying to improve the current situation until they achieve the desired result. It is possible for these people to hopefully resist the diseases and continue the treatment process in earnest

Optimism is not only effective in boosting people’s morale, but also strengthens the body’s resistance to disease by strengthening people’s immune system.

Research has also shown that the level of optimism and the strength of the body’s defense system are directly related, in other words, with increasing optimism, the body’s defense power also increases, and with decreasing optimism, our defense system also weakens.

So in general, optimism has positive effects on our lives. Positive attitude helps us to live happier, more successful and healthier.
So try to strengthen optimism in yourself to feel happier and more successful in life.

سعید ایزدپناه

Psychologists believe that optimism is a habit we learn from childhood, and our parents are our role models.
Remember, for example, when your toys, when each of them broke down, you asked your parent to fix it, and fix it, and it made us feel optimistic, that we can overcome problems.

The first step is to flight negative thoughts. Supposed you arrive late at work, before you blame yourself and say, iam always late, assess yourself carefully and try to remember the last time you arrive late at work. When was it? And this was because your car did not have gas and you had to go to the gas station.

The second step is to practice winning. For example ,People who think they will do well and succeed are much better off than those who expect tobe rejected. Imagine before the exam day that the exam sheet is in front of you and you answer the questions by remembering god, and asking for his help, and this will give you confidence and willpower.

And in the end, optimism helps a person to get rid of negative thoughts from his life and live more calmly.
As a result, he is mouth more successful in society than others and can have a good relationship with family members, and optimism is like glasses. From behind people understand the issues of life more beautifully.

احسان غلامی

Optimism is the feeling of thinking things will be well and hopeful. Positive thinking is the notion that if you think good thoughts, things will work out well. Optimistic people never face depression or frustration; To them adversity is a chance. The effects of the optimism on our lives are mentioned in the following paragraphs.

First, optimistic people are less likely to become sick or develop a disease as a person who is pessimistic. People who have an optimistic view in their lives tend to engage in healthy actions such as: not drinking alcohol, not smoking, having a healthy diet, exercising. If you have a optimistic view in your life, you want to live more healthy to enjoy your life.

Second, optimistic people are happier than pessimistic ones. Optimistic people are happier because they imagine positive results for random events in their lives instead of just waiting for the worst thing to happen. This all boosts the feeling of anticipation, which is the greater the anticipated event, the more vividly we can imagine it. Of course, it makes sense that having a sense of hope for the future would make us more content in the present.

In conclusion, there is no better alternative to optimism. Being an optimist doesn’t mean seeing rainbows 24 hours a day and everything will not be always great. Being optimistic helps us see new opportunities and learn from our mistakes and see a failure as a fresh start.

  Life optimism

We live in a stressful world where negative events are inevitable; consequently, it’s up to you to stay positive. Optimism is a good quality for people because optimistic people never experience depression or frustration. For them, adversity is an opportunity as it enhances their inner strength. Just as the ray of sunshine is needed to make the sunflower bloom, adverse situations come into our lives to fulfil our hidden possibilities. Difficulties are hidden friends that come into our lives to make us meaningful. An optimistic attitude is very helpful to achieve our goals. As people know, optimism help you to keep strong during life struggle, plays a role as a simulator, and has an eternal value, for this optimism protect your mental health.

Optimistic people never lose in the struggle of life. They even see defeat as an opportunity. It is only for this reason that nothing can touch the almighty soul; as a result, it remains calm in every way to do the best. An optimist is like a man with a torch in a deep darkness. The person who has this value or idea of life is always a positive thinker; therefore, he or she not only saves himself or herself from adverse situations but also becomes a spirit of inspiration to others. The motto of an optimist is always to be positive.

Optimism acts as a stimulator. Here the person is the one who has to do a lot to achieve the goal of life. Determination, clarity, commitment and certainly optimism are the keys of a successful person. If we look at our worries and hardships with the eye of an optimist, then we can easily see that these are our opportunities for a better life. They are there to make us physically fit and mentally strong. Swami Vivekananda has rightly said that our world is a natural gym, so we never miss a chance to prepare ourselves as powerful human beings.

Optimism has an eternal value. If you have nothing, just look at that optimism in terms of hope and patience or defend it with our worries and sufferings. This is universally true. This is the kind of value that is helpful for a great change in your life. Winston Churchill, the Prime Minister of Britain shouted with sense of positivity at the time of World War 2 with the words, “a pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty”.

In brief, being optimist is giving you a huge amount of advantage in terms of being happier, being healthier, having less stress or reducing the tendency of getting some dangerous disease. Furthermore, being optimist is not that hard to do. You do not have to force yourself to do it all, just try to do it as best as you can, and you will see the result of it.

Atena Raoufi

Optimism is defined as the tendency to overestimate future positive events and underestimate future negative events. Every day, we have optimistic or pessimistic views about our future on a moment-to-moment basis. It is a cognitive, affective, and motivational construct – optimists both think and feel positive about the future. An optimistic attitude helps us be happier, more successful, and healthier. Optimism can protect against depression — even for people who are at risk for it. An optimistic outlook makes people more resistant to stress. Optimism may even help people live longer. Some effects of optimism on our lives are mentioned below.

First, many studies have shown that optimism is associated with a slower progression of disease. For example, optimists show a slower rate of development of atherosclerosis and AIDS. Additionally, Optimism is associated with better cardiovascular functioning and reduced cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, optimism predicts a faster recovery from coronary bypass surgery and a reduced likelihood of needing another hospitalization later on. One study even found that the most optimistic participants were almost half as likely to die of all causes during the study than the least optimistic participants (controlling for other major risk factors such as age, blood pressure, weight, or smoking), particularly when it pertains cardiovascular mortality.

Second, one of the most fascinating effects of optimism is that other people may like optimists better than pessimists may. However, this may have more to do with preferring people who are more similar to yourself; in particular, one study found that optimistic men are more likely to associate with other men sharing their optimistic disposition.

Finally, optimism goes beyond seeing the bright side of a situation or expecting good things. It is also a way of explaining what has already happened. When something good happens, optimists think about what they did to make the situation turn out so well. They see their abilities as permanent, stable parts of themselves. They think of how this good thing can lead to other good things.

In conclusion, optimism is a tendency to expect good things in the future. Optimism is a mental attitude that heavily influences physical and mental health, as well as coping with everyday social and working life. Through adaptive management of personal goals and development and by using active coping tactics, optimists are significantly more successful than pessimists in aversive events and when important life goals are impaired.
