Adverbs of frequency

Frequency adverbs are used in the present tense to show the repetition of an action and to show how often something occurs. Frequency adverbs are usually used after the subject and before the verb. Here is a list of frequency adverbs.

hardly ever

not ever

Example: I always go shopping in the morning.

Example: I seldom play outside.

  • Some of these adverbs may also occur at the beginning or end of a sentence. These adverbs include:

Example: Sometimes, she bends over backward for other people and gets hurt.

Example: She bends over backward for other people and gets hurts sometimes.

Example: She sometimes bends over backward for other people and gets hurt.

  • Frequency adverbs follow to be verbs. It means we use them after to be verbs.

Example: She is never late.

Example: You are usually on time.

  • Negative adverbs such as seldom, rarely, hardly ever, and never are used with positive verbs only.

Example: She never listens to her parent’s advice.

Example: He seldom eats healthy food.

Example: They rarely visit their granny.

  • Ever is used in questions about frequency and it means at any time.

Example:  Do you ever walk to your office? 

Example: Does she ever play hard to get?

  • Ever is also used with not and it means never.

Example: I don’t ever watch the news.

  • In questions, frequency adverbs are used directly after the subject.

Example: Does she always have breakfast this early?

  • In negative sentences, most frequency adverbs are used before the  verb.

Example: She usually doesn’t talk.

  • Always is an exception. It follows a negative helping verb.

He doesn’t always argue with people.

 

Exercises

Write the sentences again and add the adverb of frequency wherever it is needed.

  1. She goes to bed early. (always)
  2. She is late for her classes. (usually)
  3. She plays the guitar in her room. (sometimes)
  4. They stay out after dark. (never)
  5. It barks in the middle of the night. (hardly ever)
