Chapter 6

Examples

  • She didn’t approach the back door at once.

Approach: come near or nearer to someone/something

Detect: find out, discover

Defect: fault, something that is wrong

Examples

  • The new employee wasn’t a team player.
  • Don’t neglect your responsibilities, or you will be punished.
  • She intentionally tried to deceive her teacher.

Employee: a person who works for pay

Neglect: give too little attention or care to someone or something

Deceive: mislead, make someone believe something that is false as true

Examples

  • She was hiding something undoubtedly.
  • The band singer was very popular.
  • I was determined to be thorough in my research.

Undoubtedly: certain, without doubt

Popular: liked by most people

Thorough: being all that is needed, complete

Examples

  • She was sure that her client wasn’t telling her the truth.
  • Their plan was simple and comprehensive.
  • He was arrested for attempting to defraud people.

Client: customer, a person for whom a lawyer acts.

Comprehensive: including much, covering completely

Defraud: take money or rights by cheating

Postpone: delay, put off for a later time

Consent: agree, give permission or approval

Capsule: a small case or covering

Preserve: keep safe, protect

Denounce: express strong disapproval of something, condemn in public

  • I stopped for a moment and watched the torrent outside.
  • I resented the fact that he was disloyal to me.

Unique: having no like or equal, being the only one of its kind

Torrent: rushing stream, flood

Resent: feel injured and angered at something

Molest: disturb, abuse

Valid: true

Survive: remain alive, live longer than

Examples

  • She had a bulky appearance.
  • I was reluctant to go there alone.
  • It was obvious that she couldn’t concentrated on the task.

Bulky: taking up much space, large

Reluctant: unwilling

Obvious: easily seen or understood, clear to the eye or mind, not to be doubted

Examples

  • There wasn’t a good school in the vicinity, so they moved to another neighborhood.
  • After a century, now people know what the law of attraction is.
  • His rage terrified everyone.

Vicinity: region near a place, neighborhood

Century: every one hundred years

Rage: violent anger

Examples

  • He wanted to conclude his speech, but he couldn’t.
  • It is an undeniable fact that whatever you think of will become the reality of your life.

Document: something handwritten or printed that gives information or proof of some facts

Conclude: end, finish, decide

Undeniable: not to be denied, can not be questioned

  • He tried to ignore her, but It was obvious that he was pretending. 

Resist: act against, oppose

ignore: pay no attention to, disregard

Whirling: turning or swinging round and round

  • We were looking at the miniature pictures of our town; it was unbelievable.
  • They believed that imagination is the source of creation.

Challenge: call to a fight

miniature: represented on a small scale

Source: place from which something comes or is obtained

Excel: be better than or do better than

Feminine: of woman or girls

Mount: get up on

  • His masculine voice always attracts the girls.

Compete: be a rival, try hard to get something wanted by others.

Dread: fear greatly, look forward to with fear

Masculine: of man, male

  • He is a menace to our society.
  • She has a tendency to exaggerate every tiny detail.
  • We thought she couldn’t do it, but it seems like we underestimated her.

Menace: threat

Tendency: movement in a certain direction

Underestimate: set too low a value, amount, or rate

Victorious: having won a victory

Numerous: many, several

Flexible: easily bent, willing to yield
